Picking a media trainer is so hard

They have to get your sector. Understand the nuances of your sector in the media. Get your perspective. Be a former media ‘someone’. Run a great workshop. Be sensitive to everyone’s needs and abilities. Work closely with the communications department to deliver the brief. Align with the CEO, but push them to the next level also. Deal with challenging members of your team. Bring energy, but also not overwhelm. They have to be price competitive and add huge value….all in four hours.

How do you find the right media trainer?

Media Training is the most satisfying job I’ve done outside interviewing Prime Ministers and filing for the ABC. A good media trainer will work with the whole person. All of their fears and all of their high and low level skills. A good media trainer helps people take their game to the next level in the media and it’s always a privilege and it’s always different.

Media Training Price

This is what you really want to know. Most media trainers are around the same cost. There’s free training online. There’s paid online courses. Media Trainers will charge an hourly rate for virtual training. Some media trainers operate a camera themselves. Some media trainers have a studio and camera crew. Look for value not price. The value you get beyond the session should outweigh the cost you pay. Look for a relationship in your media trainer opposed to a transaction. If you shop for a transaction that’s all you get. If you build a relationship you will have a lifelong media resource free of charge. We are interested in building brands and building relationships. That means most of the work I do, is for free.

Our Media Training Inquiry Process

We welcome inquiries from CEO’s, Chairs of the Boards, Communications leads or company owners. After customising a media training strategy we’ll present it to the decision makers. Due to a high volume of bookings our quotes are open for 3 weeks only.

Media Training Techniques

Listen & Rebound ™

Listen & Rebound teaches leaders how to get the non-verbal’s right while listening to a reporter’s questions. Your body language is 80% of your performance. Listen & Rebound will show you how to control your body language in the most uncomfortable of situations.

First Answer Framing ™

How you start an interview is crucial. It can set the tone and create a sphere of influence that can last for the whole interview. First Answer Framing helps interviewees delight audiences and politely put reporters on notice.

GTM – Context/Control ™

Creating context establishes control. This technique shows spokespeople how to quickly establish a context, complementing a journalist’s question while reasserting interview control.

With Good Talent media, this year we got that information to the media, to the public, shining a light on issues in ways not previously possible, and leading to some real action.

I was really pleased by the level of personal investment in the team at Good Talent Media made into the campaign. It was extremely refreshing. To put it simply, we would not have been able to achieve the results we did and have the coverage we received without the help and hard work put in by Tony and his team. We had a very tight budget to work within and they were able to deliver us results that would have cost us a lot more and a lot more leg work.

Tony Nicholls is an accomplished journalist, reporter and media trainer. I had the pleasure of working in collaboration with Tony as a communications consultant to various not for profit organisations while he was a senior reporter at the ABC. Tony followed up on important stories in relation to homelessness and community campaigns that I pitched to him during his time at the ABC. When Tony moved into his media training consultancy and the large community organisation I work for needed media training for the CEO and senior staff I immediately contacted Tony. I knew from my experience of his great skills as a journalist that he could provide excellent insight and training to our CEO and management team. The training was extremely well received and on a practical level resulted in a much improved media presence by our senior leadership team. I would recommend Tony unreservedly for any organisation looking to improve their media engagement and reach.

Feedback received from the team was very positive, with Tony helping them to focus on how best to get our message out, even when faced with difficult questions and situations. We are now sending a second group of employees to Tony for Media Training.

Thank you again for working with me yesterday. I went into our training session feeling overwhelmed. Now, I feel much more confident about my abilities and how I can better help prepare others for media interviews. It is not an exaggeration to say that this session was the missing piece in my development as a professional in my field and, perhaps, our organization as a thought leader in our space. I cannot thank you enough for that.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Good Talent crisis communications training and found it very beneficial for our staff. The session was very comprehensive and hands-on which made for a great learning environment, and Tony’s vast experience and knowledge was incredibly insightful. The training helped better equip staff for dealing with crisis situations with a clear strategy and skills for managing media in times of high pressure. I would very much recommend Tony’s training courses.

Tony’s in-depth knowledge and experience in the media industry reverberated with the Mount Hotham Management team and exposed us to new skills to prepare us for external media confrontation. He took us through a step-by-step process to develop and refine key points and messages in both positive news stories and crisis situations.

The group walked away feeling more confident and have a much stronger understanding of how to prepare for media on camera and in the social media environment.

I would recommend Tony’s media training workshops for dealing with all aspects of media.
