The Albanese government announced this week that it will introduce new laws to enforce a ban on social media usage for young people.

While this new legislation will be introduced before the upcoming federal election, it is still to be determined what age social media access should be restricted to.

Albanese revealed that his government is currently rolling out age assurance trials for those aged between 14 and 16.

To that I say, the Federal Labor government deserves congratulations for fabricating a war on the social media giants.

They are doing so, to take voters’ attention from battle ground election issues where it is struggling.

Visualise the white board session.

Cost of living, can’t change it. We’ve simply pumped too much money into the economy. Rising energy costs, necessary to get to net zero. Interest rate pressure, can’t control the Reserve Bank. Health care crisis, that’s a state government problem. The economy, who knows, we’re the Labor Party.

Bugger, we can’t deliver on anything that matters.

They say to themselves – why don’t we be the underdog in a David and Goliath battle. Let’s protect our kids from those evil social media giants.

It’s time to make a whole lot of noise about something we can’t change and win everyone’s hearts as Australia’s guardian of children. Be seen to protect our most precious resource.

It’s a topic that captures everyone’s imagination. Everyone hates the platforms. Parents are desperate to protect their kids. All parents are voters. It’s impossible for the opposition to oppose it. And all of the hot air and smoke takes away from the fact we can’t actually do what we’re hired for.

It’s an incredible piece of politics. And everyone seems to have bought it.

Well played, Albo.
